Dog Friendly Beaches in Somerset

The sun is shining this morning so we are off to our closest dog friendly Somerset beach for a run around.  Just 15 miles from us here at Middlewick is the second longest beach in Europe.  It is a stretch of sand that runs between Burnham-on-Sea and Brean Down.

It is a great family friendly beach that is very rarely crowded.  There are always plenty of dog walkers and occasionally you will be lucky enough to spot some of the horse riders galloping along the sands.  I have even spotted some cyclists out along the sand, although that looked like hard work.  The beach is lovely and flat, perfect for a jog along.  It has one of the world’s highest tidal ranges, so when the tide is out the beach seems to be huge.

You do have to be careful though when you do get a really low tide, the soft mud flats can be dangerous in places so make sure and read the information boards when you arrive.

You can park your car on Berrow beach, between Burnham and Brean, which is fantastic for families, not very far to carry your picnics.  There is a café there and usually an ice cream van parked up as well.

At the end of the beach is Brean Down which you should try and visit.  If you climb the hill there are 360 degree views all across Somerset and on a good day you can see Glastonbury Tor.  If you are lucky you may catch one of the many sand artists that create amazing pictures in the sand canvas.  There is a cute National Trust Café at the headland that serves an afternoon tea and ice creams.

The beach is enjoyable all year round.  Even though it is beautiful in the summer, my favourite time to visit is the winter.  It is so quiet on days that I imagine I am walking on the moon.
